This year’s Student Film Festival celebrates the region’s legacy in film while bringing a new generation of Arab filmmakers into a dynamic debate about a range of issues currently faced in the industry. It will screen more than 30 entries by Arab students, and hold a series of workshops, facilitated by some of the region’s most accomplished filmmakers and incorporating new realities shaped by the Arab revolt into the technical rules of our trade.
The festival pays homage to one of Lebanon’s greatest filmmakers, Maroun Baghdadi, known for his vivid renderings of the Lebanese civil war, kicking off its 5-day event with a first-ever showing of Baghdadi’s 1978 film ” Hareb ‘ala al Hareb”.
Student films will then be screened, and will enter a competition, judged by a jury of 6. In parallel, four lectures will be held – topics include sound, archiving, Lebanese production and distribution, and the media coverage of Arab uprisings through social media. The festival closes with a screening of BBC Arabic-produced “Diary of a Revolution”, a documentary by Khaled Eiz el Arab on the Egyptian revolution.
