For his 90th birthday, the French institute of Lebanon and the Metropolis association pay tribute to one of France’s most distinctive and highly regarded filmmakers, Alain Resnais, for his commitment to modernism and his inventive, artistic and exceptional contribution to the history of cinema.
This retrospective will feature screenings of a selection of nine of his feature films including “Hiroshima Mon Amour”, Resnais’ first feature film that revolutionized the classical scriptwriting methods, and two of his short documentaries: “Les Statues Meurent Aussi” and “Nuit et Brouillard”.
Prolific and provocative, Resnais continued to confront cinema to human issues exposing creative forces such as: Science (“Je t’aime, je t’aime” and “Mon Oncle d’Amérique”), structuralism (“L’Année Dernière à Marienbad”), theater (Mélo and Cœurs), entertainment (On connaît la chanson) and even politics (Stavisky).
Exclusively, his latest movie, “Vous n’avez Encore rien Vu”, which was competing at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, will open the Retrospective.
As a window on Resnais’ cinema, the film “Eternal Sunshive of the Spotless Mind” by Michel Gondry, inspired from “Je t’aime, Je t’aime” will be presented.
