Le Fond De L’air est Rouge ’A Grin Without a Cat’ is a philosophical investigation and analysis that retraces the history of left-wing movements around the world between 1967 and 1977. It also documents the influence of the war in Vietnam on these international progressive movements. Chris Marker’s film demonstrates how after the events of the Prague Spring (1968), the disillusionment of militants throughout the world gave rise to new forms of militancy, whether in defense of women’s rights, protection of the environment or the struggle against the arms race. This film is made up of a series of archives documenting the pain and suffering of those who resisted between 1967 and 1977.
