The Korean Puppet City

From Nov 24 to Nov 29, 2011
9:00am -> 8:00pm

When amazing puppets of all the shapes and colors you can think of – and some you would never have imagined – decide to hold a musical competition combining both traditional performances and contemporary music, the result is the “Puppet City”, a magical stage carnival of fantasy and creativity. But when the “Puppet City” comes to our part of the world for the first time, all the way from Korea, it is something you definitely do not want to miss!

Now you can see the magic of the “Puppet City” here in Lebanon thanks to the talents of the Hyundai Puppet Theater. These pioneers have invented truly unique and innovative techniques to recreate the intricate and realistic dancing movements that make some of their puppets look incredibly lifelike. Other puppets are made of recycled materials and are meant to encourage creativity in children and teach them the value of things. One thing is sure: you have never seen puppets dance like this!

Within the framework of “Caravan Festival 2011”, KHAYAL Association for Arts & Education, with the support of the Arts Council Korea and the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC), invites all adults and children as young as 4 years old to discover for themselves just how incredibly astonishing the “Puppet City” really is at the Sunflower Theater in Beirut, opening on November 24, 2011, at 7:00 p.m.

Since its inauguration in March 2011, “Caravan Festival 2011” has hosted 3 international puppet plays from Denmark, Spain and France, in parallel with puppet workshops, as well as Lebanese plays by the Lebanese Puppet Theater and other local theater companies. All these performances were staged in theaters, public libraries and municipal halls in different cities and villages across Lebanon, for the purpose of developing cultural awareness in all areas of the country – not just in Beirut – and encourage support for similar initiatives. The “Puppet City” will mark the conclusion of the festival this year, until the next edition in 2013.
