The Speech of Matter

From Oct 5 to Oct 21, 2011
10:00am -> 7:00pm
Janine Rubeiz Gallery

At a time when art is concept and discourse, the matter remains the starting point of any experimentation and creativity. Science has been endlessly studying the physical and chemical properties of matters to invent new tools and technologies. Materials around us, be they natural or industrial, mineral or plant have not revealed all their secrets yet.

Similarly in the field of Visual arts, the aesthetic and visual aspects of matter continue to provide a field of experimentation and creation continually renewed. In this sense, the Gallery Janine Rubeiz presents a group exhibition of artists for whom matter is not only the tool for their creation, but the subject of their speech.

Samir Khaddaje expresses the chaos of the city through a violent relation to matter. Bassam Geitani draw the marks of physical effects of different materials on his canvas, creating a strong link between art and science. Hanibal Srouji plays with elements fire, water, earth, metal and
wood to create a universe that expresses his relation to the world and his personal history.

Joanna Rizk recycles newsprint and invites us to walk through a new dimension of canvas-trees.

Joseph Chahfe creates large areas consisting of thick layers of materials that appear as a color matrix.
