Revisiting the timeless dynamics of the relations between orient and occident allowed for the unfolding of our common humanity. A loofah-dress serves as texture for the inner psychological and mental structure as “externalized skin” and the materials used for these themes like salt, henna, wax, sand and horn relate to the presence of their history still with us today. This approach refers to Gaston Bachelard´s idea of cultural evolution as the reinterpretation of myths.

Cornelia Krafft
By painting driftwood I try to animate the inanimate by evoking the presence of beings. In some cases, these are analogues of familiar animals, both real and mythical; in others, fragments of landscape may appear. To me the journey of the wood from earth to water to earth again in a transformed state is not unlike that of our consciousness as we realize the interdependence of each creature in nature. The finished pieces reveal themselves slowly, in layers of understanding. Together they form a multi-part entity yet separately each stands alone.

Afaf Zurayk

Born in Beirut, Afaf Zurayk graduated with distinction from the American University of Beirut with a B.A. in Fine Arts in 1970. She then obtained a Masters degree in Fine Arts from Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1972. Her first international individual exhibition dates back to 1987 at the Addison/Ripley Gallery in Washington, DC. The Foundry Gallery hosted three solo exhibitions in 1991, 1993 and 1995. On the Lebanese scene, she held an individual exhibition in 1994 at Theatre de Beyrouth that was preceded in 1980 by one at the Goethe Institut. Galerie Janine Rubeiz organized three personal exhibitions for her in Beirut: “Persona” in 1997, “Conversations” in 2001 and “Painting 2000-2007” in 2008. Since 1991, she has participated in a score of international collective exhibitions in Washington DC namely at the World Bank (1996), the National Museum of Women in the Arts (1994), Alif Gallery (1994 and 1991), Foundry Gallery (1992 and 1992), Art Barn Gallery (1991) and Martin Luther King Library (1991). Her collective exhibitions with Galerie Janine Rubeiz have included the “Pinceaux pour Plumes” show at Musée Sursock.

Cornelia Krafft

Born in Munich, Germany in 1972
Holds a Masters degree in Fine Arts of Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Austria. She received several scholarships and took part in artist residency programs in Italy and Australia. She has taught at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and is Professor at the American University of Beirut since 2009.
Her recent public performances with unprofessional young Lebanese like “777” in the Dome downtown Beirut in 2010 and “Along the white line” at the Cornich, Beirut in 2011 were internationally reviewed in Lebanon the US, Canada and Austria. She was one of the selected artists to represent Lebanon at the 54thVenice Biennale 2011, which was canceled by the ministry. With specific respect for the transience of life and nature, she mostly visualizes literature through spatial transformations. Her performances are generaly mute, using nature or urban deserted spaces as a stage. The focus on the female struggle in society throughout history, especially in ancient myths, has always been a strong actuator for her work.
This show is her first participation at Galerie Janine Rubeiz.

This composition of paintings and installation objects draws its inspiration from the original myth of the Phoenician princess Europa, sister of Phoenix, who was abducted to Crete from Lebanon´s shores by Zeus, who, in the shape of a bull, took her through the open sea.

["post-13754","directory","type-directory","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-exhibitions

"Scripted on Water"
