C\u00e9cile Hartmann films a construction site in Dubai. Chia-Wei Hsu films his grandmother in the port of Taiwan\u2019s \u2018Hoping Island\u2019 on the island of Keelung, under Japanese occupation before the handover of the island to Taiwan. Based on memories of a missionary doctor in the early 20th Century and contemporary photographs taken at the border region of British India and Afghanistan, Miranda Pennel evokes colonial conflicts. Her film plays sound against image to draw the portraits of the protagonists.
