Founded in 2000, Irtijal is presently the oldest music festival of the city of Beirut, and one of the longest standing international festivals of post-war Lebanon. Irtijal is organized by MILL, a non-profit association founded in 2000 by musicians Mazen Kerbaj and Sharif Sehnaoui, with the intent of promoting contemporary and experimental practices in music, and assisting projects that do not fit within the Lebanese mainstream, yet still present undeniable artistic value.<\/p>\n
Born in 1961 in Istanbul, Saadet T\u00fcrk\u00f6z is a Kazakh-Turkish singer and composer. She grew up in Istanbul, where she first worked as a journalist and translator. T\u00fcrk\u00f6z\u2019s first recordings were influenced by the folk music of her homeland, East Turkestan; in recent years, her repertoire has widened to include improvised music and modern interpretations of Turkish and Kazakh music.<\/p>\n
In addition to solo performances, T\u00fcrk\u00f6z performs in duos, trios and larger, free improvising formations. She has played with Elliott Sharp, Okkyung Lee, Eyvind Kang, Carl Stone and Larry Ochs, among others, and performed with Paed Conca\u2019s BLAST quintet.<\/p>\n
Hans Hassler is a Swiss accordionist, born in 1945 in Chur, Switzerland. He studied accordion in Copenhagen with Danish master Mogens Ellegaard, who is widely regarded as the \u201cfather of the classical accordion\u201d, and later learned to play the clarinet, piano, and guitar. He has performed in musical styles ranging from opera to Dixieland.<\/p>\n
Hassler contributed to the Zurich Chamber Orchestra (Zurcher Kammerorchester), recorded with avant-jazz Swiss group Habarigani and, most notably, with Mathias Ruegg\u2019s Vienna Art Orchestra and Swiss Art Orchestra. He has also played with the Ivano Torre Quintetto, Swiss band Beat F\u00f6llmi, and German jazz saxophonist Gebhard Ullmann.<\/p>\n
