On the main jetty at Orly airport a child is struck by a woman\u2019s face as she sees a man fall to his death. Years later, after a third world war has destroyed Paris, the survivors have retreated into caverns beneath the ruins where mad scientists use them for strange experiments. Time is the only way to survive in this world; only the future and the past can save the present.<\/p>\n

Alain Resnais and Chris Marker denounce colonialism and the cultural ethnocentrism of the West in this essay on African art. Authentic creations linked to the distinct pantheistic culture and magic of these regions, notably statues and masks, have been corrupted and little by little replaced by colonialism with artistic activities that are repetitive and marketable. <\/p>\n
