{"id":24743,"date":"2013-05-20T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-05-20T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/24743\/beirut-marathon-association-launches-sexist-campaign"},"modified":"2023-08-30T07:29:13","modified_gmt":"2023-08-30T07:29:13","slug":"beirut-marathon-association-launches-sexist-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/en\/24743\/beirut-marathon-association-launches-sexist-campaign\/","title":{"rendered":"Beirut Marathon Association Launches Sexist Campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/24743-250x92.png\"><br \/>  <i>(Photo via <br \/>  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=10151490426458996&#038;set=a.10150667324443996.420288.132733888995&#038;type=3&#038;theater\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">Beirut Marathon Association<\/a>)<\/i><br \/>  <br \/>  As a kind of runner, I&#8217;m immensely offended that the Beirut Marathon Association thinks that it&#8217;s <i>okay<\/i> to motivate women to run their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/l\/23653\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">10 KM Women\u2019s Challenge<\/a> based off compliments.<br \/>  <br \/>  With posters that feature degrading pick-up lines, like &#8220;byelbaalik tirikdi&#8221;, &#8220;awiyeh&#8221;, and &#8220;<i>he<\/i> believes I can run&#8221;, the Beirut Marathon Association empowers women by berating them with gender discrimination, telling them that they&#8217;re attractive and <i>tough<\/i> while they run.<br \/>  <br \/>  First of all, running is not meant to be attractive. It&#8217;s meant for excercise, health, and overall weight loss. Case in point: I look like a drowned banshee when I run. Secondly, I don&#8217;t friggin care if &#8220;he believes I can run&#8221;&#8230;. <i>I<\/i> believe I can run, and that&#8217;s all that matters. And thirdly, would the Beirut Marathon Association have made this campaign if it were reverse? &#8220;Men you&#8217;re so hot when you run?&#8221; <br \/>  <br \/>  So if it&#8217;s not already obvious, I&#8217;m totally disappointed in whoever created this campaign. Health and self-respect should always take precedent over beauty, and should <i>never<\/i> be based off of <i>his<\/i> opinion of you. Ever.<br \/>  <br \/>  <br \/>  <br \/>  <br \/>      <figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex
