{"id":26576,"date":"2013-07-10T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-07-10T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/26576\/alleged-wife-beater-karam-bazi-is-still-a-free-man"},"modified":"2023-08-30T07:22:59","modified_gmt":"2023-08-30T07:22:59","slug":"alleged-wife-beater-karam-bazi-is-still-a-free-man","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/en\/26576\/alleged-wife-beater-karam-bazi-is-still-a-free-man\/","title":{"rendered":"Alleged Wife Beater, Karam Bazi, is Still a Free Man"},"content":{"rendered":"<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/26576-1-250x188.png\" width=\"100%\"><br \/>  <i>(Photo via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=160330970779115&#038;set=a.109986965813516.21118.100004066398504&#038;type=1&#038;theater\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook.com<\/a>)<\/i><br \/>  <br \/>  The husband of Roula Yaacoub &#8211; the 31-year-old woman who was pronounced dead on Sunday after being found beaten and unconscious at her home following a domestic dispute &#8211; has not been charged with her death, and has retained custody of his five daughters.<br \/>  <br \/>  Neighbors told <a href=\"https:\/\/mtv.com.lb\/News\/223722\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">MTV News<\/a>, that Karam Bazi &#8220;constantly beat&#8221; his wife Roula and her children, who range in age from 10 months to 12-years-old.<br \/>  <br \/>  Separately, neighbors<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?feature=player_embedded&#038;v=KiwifCY775c\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">told LBCI news on Monday<\/a> they heard the couple fighting Sunday evening and even heard Roula scream for help. She was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to the Youssef Medical Center.<br \/>  <br \/>  Police are currently investigating the incident, pending the results of an autopsy report.<br \/>  <br \/>  On Tuesday, Yaacoub&#8217;s family blocked the main road in Halba, a village in the northern city of Akkar, to demand the immediate arrest of their son-in-law. They also demanded that Roula&#8217;s body be buried in her hometown. Meantime, rumors circulated, according to the family, that local politicians were interfering to help Bazi avoid arrest. <br \/>  <br \/>  The body has since been handed over to the family, but Bazi remains free of any charges.<br \/>  <br \/>  According to the NGO KAFA, since 2010, 26 women have been killed at the hands of a male relative. The organization, which fights violence and exploitation, also says it pursued 425 cases of domestic violence between 2011 and 2012.<br \/>  <br \/>  <img decoding=\"async\"
