As this is a major entrance in and out of the capital, many commuters were inconvenienced, and many vented their annoyance on Twitter. Yet, what seemed odd to me was just how little patience people had with the protest, dismissing it almost immediately as \u201cdisgusting,\u201d or \u201chabal.\u201d I wasn\u2019t there, stuck in traffic for three hours, so I can\u2019t say for certain how I would have felt in that situation, and generally speaking, my take on protests is simple: people don\u2019t do it for fun; they do it because they feel they have to, or because some injustice &#8212; at least in their view &#8212; has occurred. But again, I wasn\u2019t there.<br \/>  <br \/>  SO, to better understand this reaction, I\u2019ve decided to play devil\u2019s advocate and think of some possible reasons for this anger.<br \/>  <br \/>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/30909-250x167.png\"><br \/>  Electricity workers block the coastal highway between Karantina and Dora causing heavy traffic, Tuedsay, Jan. 14, 2014. Traffic sucks.<\/big><\/big><\/b><br \/>  <br \/>  Just being in a car that\u2019s stuck behind another car, that\u2019s stuck behind another car, for hours on end, is a miserable experience. In fact, driving in general can bring out the worst in people. In his book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/How-Emotions-Work-Humans-Computers-ebook\/dp\/B00B32VWTW\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;How Emotions Work,&#8221;<\/a> Joseph Katz describes driving as a \u2018dumb behavior\u2019 &#8212; not dumb as in \u2018stupid,\u2019 but dumb as in \u2018unable to communicate.\u2019 In other words, driving makes you \u2018dumb\u2019 because you can\u2019t express yourself directly to other drivers, or, more importantly, understand why they\u2019re doing what they\u2019re doing. Everyone around becomes an idiot who can\u2019t drive simply because mutual recognition &#8212; something easier to do when navigating a sidewalk, for example &#8212; isn\u2019t possible. And so your frustration grows as all these idiot drivers sabotage your commute. Now, imagine adding something particularly disruptive to this already frustrating commute\u2026<br \/>  <br \/>  <b><big><big>2. People really, really like their job\/school.<\/big><\/big><\/b><br \/>  <br \/>  Hey &#8211; it\u2019s possible! I mean, why else would people be so angry about having a legitimate reason to be late? In fact, if we remember that <a href=\"articles.latimes.com\/2013\/dec\/17\/business\/la-fi-mo-tuesday-is-the-most-productive-day-of-the-workweek-20131216\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">Tuesday is the most productive day of the workweek<\/a>, well then now the whole week is ruined! Thanks, unemployed people!<br \/>  <br \/>  <b><big><big>3. We\u2019re just sick of roads being blocked, that\u2019s all!<\/big><\/big><\/b><br \/>  <br \/>  Fair point. Just google \u201clebanon protesters block roads\u201d and see how how many articles you\u2019ll find.<br \/>  <br \/>  <b><big><big>4. <a href=\"https:\/\/ginosblog.com\/2012\/05\/31\/fire-the-edl-workers-now\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">It\u2019s a metaphor.<\/a><\/big><\/big><\/b><br \/>  <br \/>  This one\u2019s a little trickier. You see, like many things in Lebanon, the blocking of a road is not just about people being in the way and your time being wasted; it\u2019s also about the very heart and soul of the system. A blocked road is a metaphor for a weak state. A traffic jam is code for failed infrastructure and wasted taxes. A dude popping wheelies on a scooter without a helmet while not paying for the electricity he\u2019s stealing is everything that\u2019s wrong with post-war Lebanese culture! <br \/>  <br \/>  You get the point.<br \/>  <br \/>  <b><big><big>5. A-ha! You\u2019ve said it yourself!This is the EDL we\u2019re talking about\u2026<\/big><\/big><\/b><br \/>  <br \/>  True. People don\u2019t tend to think very highly of Electricit\u00e9 du Liban, and who could blame them? Not when so many Lebanese kids\u2019 first French words are <i>moteur<\/i> and <i>dejanteur<\/i>. <br \/>  <br \/>  But think of it this way: if you go to Starbucks and think the coffee tastes awful,
