We obsess over rankings a little too much. Should we really care what The Daily Beast <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beirutreport.com\/2014\/03\/the-misguided-beast.html\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">thinks of us<\/a>, or how <a href=\"https:\/\/blogbaladi.com\/the-selfiest-cities-in-the-world-beirut-ranked-210\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018selfie-ish\u2019<\/a> our capital is, or is purported to be? <br \/>  <br \/>  Of course, it\u2019s hard not to be curious, and some lists &#8212; like <a href=\"https:\/\/blogbaladi.com\/women-in-politics-2014-report-lebanon-at-the-bottom-of-rankings\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">this one<\/a>, on women in politics &#8212; can certainly be helpful when applying pressure on policymakers. It\u2019s also nice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/l\/24108\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">to know that we\u2019re doing okay<\/a> in some sectors too. <br \/>  <br \/>  And yet, there\u2019s always more than one way to interpret data. Here are three rankings that generated some buzz online; what else can they tell us?<br \/>  <br \/>  <b><big><big>1. Measuring the Tourist Economy<\/big><\/big><\/b><br \/>  <br \/>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"315\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/byk42UxVeng\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>  <br \/>  <br \/>  In a country where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.isn.ethz.ch\/Digital-Library\/Publications\/Detail\/?ots591=0c54e3b3-1e9c-be1e-2c24-a6a8c7060233&#038;lng=en&#038;id=131580\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">it\u2019s estimated<\/a> that 37.6% of our GDP in 2010 came from tourism, we kinda like knowing that people visit us. Who needs to diversify the economy when the arrivals gate is such a sure indicator of national prosperity? <br \/>  <br \/>  The importance of tourism to the national economy explains why we get mad at the Daily Beast or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iloubnan.info\/tourism\/77705\/Good-news:-Lebanon-is-one-of-the-best-food-destinations-in-the-world\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">feel relief<\/a> when people like our food. It also explains why the Ministry of Tourism will jump at any chance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naharnet.com\/stories\/en\/102483\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">to provide evidence<\/a> of a job well done. <br \/>  <br \/>  Last year, readers of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cntraveler.com\/readers-choice-awards\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">Cond\u00e9 Nast Traveler<\/a> voted Beirut <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cntraveler.com\/readers-choice-awards\/best-cities-world_slideshow_item4_5\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">number 20<\/a> out of 25 \u2018Top Cities of the World.\u2019 Well, shucks, thank you 79,268 <a https:\/\/www.magsdirect.com\/condenasttraveler-magazine3.html\" target=\"_new\">randomly-selected<\/a> subscribers of this particular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magazine.org\/asme\/about-asme\/pressroom\/asme-press-releases\/national-magazine-awards-2011-finalists-announced\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">award-winning<\/a> travel magazine! You totally get it, unlike that other <a href=\"https:\/\/winners.webbyawards.com\/search?keywords=daily%20beast\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">award-winning<\/a> publication. We\u2019re really looking forward to reading your opinion in 2014. Given that you didn\u2019t quite like Beirut enough to up-vote us in 2012, who knows what insights you\u2019ll bring this year!<br \/>  <br \/>  I guess what I\u2019m trying to say is: I don\u2019t read travel magazines.<br \/>  <br \/>  <b><big><big>2. Valuing the Lebanese Passport<\/big><\/big><\/b><br \/>  <br \/>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/32029-250x129.png\"width=\"100%\"><br \/>  (Introducing: <a href=\"https:\/\/rubanteria.com\/products\/her\/bags-wallets\/lebanese-passport-tote-bag\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">The Lebanese passport tote bag<\/a>)<br \/>  <br \/>  Lebanese people also sometimes enjoy visiting other places, so knowing which countries require what of us is both practical and sensible. So <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http%3A%2F%2Fabirghattas.com%2Flebanese-passport-top-10-worst-passports%2F&#038;sa=D&#038;sntz=1&#038;usg=AFQjCNF1hr12ygJ20yBAklUKBdXVs3gyYQ\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">this ranking<\/a> is actually quite practical. As a citizen of Lebanon, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/abirghattas.com\/lebanese-passport-top-10-worst-passports\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">choose from 180 visas<\/a> to apply to across the globe. Citizens of the US, UK and Finland, for example, only get to apply to 7, decreasing their bureaucratic negotiation skills significantly. Only Afghanistan tops us, with 190 ways to learn about border regimes. <br \/>  <br \/>  So stop complaining about the passport! No pain, no gain. Go hard, or go home. This is how we build resilience! Or, at the very least, this is how we find out which immigration process is most profitable.<br \/>  <br \/>  <b><big><big>3. Quantifying Love <3 <\/big><\/big><\/b><br \/>  <br \/>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"315\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xhrBDcQq2DM\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>  <br \/>  <br \/>  Another perk of being Lebanese is the world\u2019s interest in your affairs. On any given day, you will bump into one or more researchers interested in many things. They\u2019ll usually ask you about the war, or politics, or some other thorny social issue. If you\u2019re a taxi driver, you may be asked about all three. <br \/>  <br \/>  But one day, someone will show up and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloombergview.com\/articles\/2013-02-13\/valentine-s-day-and-the-economics-of-love\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">ask you<\/a>: \u201cDid you experience love for a lot of the day yesterday?\u201d That will be your chance to smile and say: \u2018akeed! Ma ana bheb el hayet!\u2019 (Of course! I love life). Then someone will find this data and compile a very interesting list that reveals how, despite all the other terrible things other researchers ask you about, you live in a country with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plus961.com\/2014\/02\/lebanon-is-8th-in-feeling-the-most-love-in-the-world\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">widespread feelings of love<\/a>. Isn\u2019t science amazing?<br \/>  <br \/>  My interest is certainly piqued, pollsters.
