Parliament Passes Civil Defense Bill<\/big><\/big><\/b><br \/>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/32475-3.png\"width=\"100%\"><br \/>  (image via <a href=\"https:\/\/english.al-akhbar.com\/node\/19359\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">english.al-akhbar.com<\/a>)<br \/>  <br \/>  On Wednesday, after public sector workers went on a strike in demand of a wage hike, and despite the objection of Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk, Parliament approved Wednesday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailystar.com.lb\/News\/Lebanon-News\/2014\/Apr-09\/252786-parliament-convenes-as-strikes-erupt-across-lebanon.ashx#axzz2yU4ajX00 \" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">a draft law<\/a> to grant Civil Defense volunteers full-time employment.<br \/>  <br \/>  Earlier that day, a group of Civil Defense volunteers gathered on the Ramlet al-Baida beach and plunged into the sea in a symbolic act of defiance, as others demonstrated outside Parliament demanding the passage of the law.<br \/>  <br \/>  <b><big><big>2. Heavy Rainfall Waterlogs Vehicles in Keserwan<\/big><\/big><\/b><br \/>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"315\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DjXK_Dw7Nhk\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>  <br \/>  <br \/>  Early morning rain on Thursday caused severe traffic jams on the highway from Beirut towards Jounieh and in Keserwan.  A number of cars were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lbcgroup.tv\/news\/149607\/report-heavy-rainfall waterlogs-vehicles-in-keserw\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">waterlogged<\/a> and significantly damaged in the Al-Wadi neighborhood located between Zouk Mikael and Zouk Mosbeh.<br \/>  <br \/>  The heavy rainfalls also lead to the injury of six people in traffic accidents in the regions of Harissa, Safra, Naameh, and Kfardebian.<br \/>  <br \/>  <b><big><big>3. Parliament: Parents Have a Right to Smack Children<\/big><\/big><\/b><br \/>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/32475-250x141.png\"width=\"100%\"><br \/>  (image via <a href=\" https:\/\/www.essentialkids.com.au\/preschoolers\/preschooler-behaviour-and-discipline\/smacking-linked-to-mental-disorders-20120723-22j8r.html<br \/>  &#8221; target=&#8221;_new&#8221;>essentialkids.com.au<\/a>)<br \/>  <br \/>  A recommendation to overturn a law on child physical chastisement submitted by Change and Reform bloc MP Simon Abi Ramia <a href=\"https:\/\/now.mmedia.me\/lb\/en\/inthepress\/542883-lebanese-parliament-maintains-parents-right-to-smack-children\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">was refused<\/a>, on Thursday by most of the MPs that were present at the session.<br \/>  <br \/>  However, parliament agreed to amend the law according to the following: \u201c\u201cThe law allows non-violent [physical and verbal] chastisement inflicted on children by fathers and mothers, provided that it does not leave any impact on their psychological and physical health.\u201d<br \/>  <br \/>  <b><big><big>4. Health Ministry: Lebanon Faces Polio Threat<\/big><\/big><\/b><br \/>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/32475-1-250x160.png\"width=\"100%\"><br \/>  (image via: <a href=\"https:\/\/now.mmedia.me\/lb\/en\/lebanonnews\/542823-health-ministry-lebanon-faced-by-new-polio-threat\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">now.mmedia.me<\/a>)<br \/>  <br \/>  \u201cThe closest danger for Lebanon lies in Syria where 38 [Polio] cases have been observed. This means there could be [as many as]  <a href=\"https:\/\/now.mmedia.me\/lb\/en\/lebanonnews\/542823-health-ministry-lebanon-faced-by-new-polio-threat\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">200 hundred cases<\/a> that have not been discovered until now,&#8221; Health Minister Wael Abu Faour announced this week.<br \/>  <br \/>  Children in Lebanon are in danger of contracting the disease as new cases are being detected in the region. Abu Faour urged media outlets to provide coverage of the issue so as to promote awareness among citizens. <br \/>  <br \/>  <b><big><big>5. Top Ain el-Hilweh Cleric Survives Assassination Attempt<\/big><\/big><\/b><br \/>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/32475-2-250x165.png\"width=\"100%\"><br \/>  (image via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naharnet.com\/stories\/en\/125874-gunman-assassinates-al-ahbash-top-cleric-in-ain-el-hilweh\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">naharnet.com<\/a>)<br \/>  <br \/>  An unknown gunman on Wednesday tried to assassinate the top official of the Association of Islamic Charitable Projects in Ain el-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp in southern Lebanon.<br \/>  <br \/>  According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naharnet.com\/stories\/en\/125874-gunman-assassinates-al-ahbash-top-cleric-in-ain-el-hilweh\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">Naharnet<\/a>, Sheikh Orsan Suleiman suffered severe head wounds in the incident. The hospital says he is alive but in a &#8220;very critical condition.&#8221;<br \/>  <br \/>  The development comes after eight people were killed and ten others were wounded on Monday in fierce clashes at the nearby Mieh Mieh Palestinian refugee camp.<br \/>  <br \/>  <b><big><big>6. Mystery Surrounds Death of 52-Year-Old Lebanese Woman<\/big><\/big><\/b><br \/>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"315\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OH0FGBqoXRA\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>  <br \/>  <br \/>  Instead of being taken to a hospital on Thursday after suffering from fractures to both her hands and legs, and bleeding profusely from the head, Samira Shedid was rushed to a Burj Hammoud police station, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lbcgroup.tv\/news\/149349\/report-lebanese-woman-dies-after-prolonged-stay-in\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">LBC<\/a>. Shedid, 52, was found injured in Dora. The circumstances behind her injuries remain a mystery. <br \/>  <br \/>  According to the Internal Security Forces, various citizens reported that Samira was taking off her clothes in the Dora roundabout, adding that ISF members transported her to the police station and handcuffed her &#8220;to prevent her from harming herself.&#8221; <br \/>  <br \/>  Her family was only able to transfer her to a nearby hospital after going through a legal process.
