While that&#8217;s unlikely to happen any time soon, we decided to take this opportunity to remind ourselves of what it was that made Yasmine and Zeid the true pioneers of the Lebanese indie scene with this throwback to a time when the very best music in town came in a plastic jewel case and had the words &#8220;La CD-Th\u00e8que&#8221; on the back:<\/big><br \/>  <br \/>  <b><big><big>1. Lost (1997)<\/big><\/big><\/b><br \/>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eWZhYDz1c-E\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>  <br \/>  <br \/>  <big>As the country was lulled into post-war normalcy with songs like <i>Raje3 Raje3 Yet3ammar<\/i> and <i>La3younak<\/i>, Soap Kills emerged with a melancholy name and sound that expressed the angst that many of us were feeling during that surreal decade.<br \/>  <br \/>  Their debut EP, &#8220;Lost,&#8221; was only four tracks long, but listening to it at the time felt like stumbling on a manifesto. With cryptic lyrics like &#8220;let&#8217;s walk on the beach, there is no sea at all,&#8221; the title track painted a strange and dark landscape without falling into the trap of protest song literalism. The EP also featured a bluesy, conflicted love song called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nnBpRBVMsWY\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">Salopette<\/a> which has surprisingly aged well over the years. But the standout track still has to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xAsAltUTKNk\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">Violence<\/a>. The way that song abruptly ends at peak crescendo still sends shivers up the spine.<\/big><br \/>  <br \/>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/40403-250x188.png\" width=\"100%\"><br \/>  <br \/>  <b><big><big>2. Bater (2000)<\/big><\/big><\/b><br \/>  <big>Soap Kills&#8217; first full-length album was the enigmatically titled and packaged &#8220;Bater,&#8221; a record that saw them turn to their signature trip-hop sound. The album features some of Soap Kills&#8217; best material; songs like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ri3dv5FYv_U\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">Le Zaalen?<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rJ_2dfulliU\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">Coit Me<\/a> &#8212; updated by Yasmine in her solo album, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=C6PnNQbiDis\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">Arabology<\/a> &#8212; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=I8_ZhF4LmEo\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">Follow<\/a> &#8212; covered by Zeid, with his band <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NZSz4Flo89A\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">The New Government<\/a>. But Bater&#8217;s highlight is the haunting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HEBwxjamiuQ\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">Yahoo!<\/a>, a song that puts a clever, internet-age twist on that timeless story of Lebanese migration &#8212; \u201chabibi tar khalf el bi7ar, fattesh 3aleh bel Yahoo.\u201d<\/big><br \/>  <br \/>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/40403-1-scaled.png\" width=\"100%\"><br \/>  <br \/>  <b><big><big>3. Cheftak (2002)<\/big><\/big><\/b><br \/>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KU9C0hPMwkQ\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>  <br \/>  <br \/>  <big>By their second album, Soap Kills began showcasing a more diverse electro-pop sound that prefigured the solo experimentations Zeid and Yasmine would take in the coming years. Several instrumentals on the record &#8212; like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jDNVD_GWnuY\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">Dub4me<\/a>, which would become the basis of <a href=\"https:\/\/myspace.com\/rayessbekmusic\/music\/song\/choufo-halone-85387677-94440696\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">Rayess Bek&#8217;s Choufo Halone<\/a> &#8212; showcase Zeid\u2019s skills as a producer, a muscle he\u2019ll keep flexing in many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lebaneseunderground.com\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">future projects<\/a>. On other tracks &#8212; like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9W4zAajdHF0\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">Tango<\/a>, a reworked cover of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=y1EvYd5b-xk\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">Nour Al-Houda\u2019s Tango Al-Amal<\/a> &#8212; Yasmine&#8217;s neo-moutriba croonings take center stage, hinting at the kind of solo artist she would also become in later years.<br \/>  <br \/>  The diversity of this album makes it hard to pick one standout track; if you like wordplay and a dancey-beat, the title track, <a href=\"<URL>&#8221; target=&#8221;_new&#8221;>Cheftak<\/a>, is the one for you, but if you&#8217;re more into Soap Kills&#8217; somber side, then <a href=\"<URL>&#8221; target=&#8221;_new&#8221;>Kazdoura<\/a>, with its eerie honeydew synth-lines, will definitely hit the spot.<\/big><br \/>  <br \/>  <b><big><big>4. Enta Fen (2005)<\/big><\/big><\/b><br \/>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/thmtGBh_Nww\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>  <br \/>  <br \/>  <big>Soap Kills\u2019 last album together featured three orchestral or acoustic reworkings of older tracks from their discography, and a collaboration with RBG, from Kita3iyon, whom Zeid had been working with for a while. While this record showcased Soap Kills\u2019 sound at its most polished, at the time, the album felt like the duo were anxious to move on to new projects. Zeid had already formed <a href=\"<URL>&#8221; target=&#8221;_new&#8221;>The New Government<\/a>, and released a few \u2018Soap-like\u2019 tracks as Shift-Z. Indeed, listening to the record now, it is striking how we could already hear elements of the sound we would get to know years later with <a href=\"<URL>&#8221; target=&#8221;_new&#8221;>Zeid and the Wings<\/a>, in the two standout tracks <a href=\"<URL>&#8221; target=&#8221;_new&#8221;>Herzan<\/a> and <a href=\"<URL>&#8221; target=&#8221;_new&#8221;>Wahch<\/a>. <br \/>  <br \/>  Yet, with Yasmine\u2019s solo take on the title track <a href=\"<URL>&#8221; target=&#8221;_new&#8221;>(Enta Fen, Again)<\/a> coming out a few years later, and the constant reworking of previous material in future projects, it seems like this band will live on, despite its <a href=\"<URL>&#8221; target=&#8221;_new&#8221;>\u201cMurder in Slow Motion.\u201d<\/a><\/big><br \/>      <figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"188\" data-id=\"417839\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/40403-250x188.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-417839\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/40403-250x188.png 250w, https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/40403-600x450.png 600w,
