And if you just so happen to be one of them, then the following mysteries must\u2019ve impacted your existence in one way or another.<br \/>  <br \/>  <br \/>  <B>1. What in the civilized world is happening to Garbage?<\/b><br \/>  <br \/>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/53efc2dae4b0c741572f7531\/t\/5ab9535570a6adbe138c97a8\/1522094943852\/Brother+Merle+-+Hertel+Garbage.gif\"width=\"100%\"><br \/>  <br \/>  Driving\/walking around Beirut these days feels more like sticking your head willingly into a putrefied garbage bag. And yet none of the people in charge bothers enlightening us as a suffocating population on what their genius \u2018waste management\u2019 will smell like in the very near future.<br \/>  <br \/>  <br \/>  <B>2. Jal El Dib Bridge [and bridges in general].<\/B><br \/>  <br \/>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/56025.png\"><br \/>  <i>Image via LebanonDebate<\/i> <br \/>  <br \/>  Lebanese infrastructure logic 101: let\u2019s slash out three lanes from each side of the main highway and have poor drivers who were already dying in hellish traffic get stuck in an even bigger congestion for at least an extra hour all the way from Nahr El Kalb to Jal EL Dib meanwhile, in order to construct a life-saving bridge that should have probably been built a decade ago and will now take just as much to complete [not to mention that we still don\u2019t know how exactly it will contribute to easing traffic after completion]. You\u2019re basically making the architectural mid-highway marvel that is Dora Bridge look good in comparison. <br \/>  <br \/>  <br \/>  <B>3. How people earning little more than minimum wage can afford expensive cars.<\/B><br \/>  <br \/>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/www.thefunsizedlife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/cfeefb87-fe38-4c2a-b342-e11c50907862.gif.jpeg.gif\"width=\"100%\"><br \/>  <br \/>  They also happen to be the same people nagging constantly about \u0648\u0636\u0639 \u0627\u0644\u0628\u0644\u062f [useless Arabic phrase used to depict the country\u2019s less-than-okay situation], generator bills and their children\u2019s unbearable tuition fee raise. But you still gotta keep the prestige when you got for a drive around the neighborhood or hand your vehicle to the valet at the latest club in town no?<br \/>  <br \/>  <br \/>  <B>4. Trucks that drive on the left lane.<\/B><br \/>  <br \/>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/56025-1.png\"><br \/>  <br \/>  Or maybe just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/l\/51547\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">trucks that drive<\/a>. <br \/>  <br \/>  <br \/>  \u2028<B>5. Everyone knowing everyone from somewhere.<\/B><br \/>  <br \/>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/InUwzmwzWeLD2\/giphy.gif\"width=\"100%\"><br \/>  <br \/>  Lebanon\u2019s inherent smallness and interconnectedness can get truly mind-blowing at times. From wedding parties and random events to Instagram and even the mini-market next door, strange encounters and unthinkable connections between people are almost too frequent to still be deemed surprising. One the bright side, life is much more interesting when there\u2019s a 50 percent chance that everyone you meet is a distant relative.<br \/>  <br \/>  <br \/>  <B>6. The audacity of public transport minivans.<\/B><br \/>  <br \/>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/56025-2.png\"><br \/>  <br \/>  Is there a secret minivan society in Lebanon? Do minivan drivers organize weekly underground meetings to discuss how they can inflict more pain and terror upon other drivers by turning the road into a living hell? Are they straight up okay with risking the sheer death of everyone who dares hover near them? Is there any room for behavioral improvement anywhere in the horizon?<br \/>  <br \/>  <br \/>  <B>7. Traffic times and patterns.<\/B><br \/>  <br \/>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/56025-3.png\"><br \/>  <i>Image via NNA<\/i><br \/>  <br \/>  I stopped thinking of a logical way to anticipate traffic patterns on any given day. It\u2019s just hopeless and you just gotta live with it.<br \/>  <br \/>  <br \/>  <B>8. Suicidal highway crossing.<\/B><br \/>  <br \/>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/data.photofunky.net\/output\/image\/b\/f\/5\/1\/bf51df\/photofunky.gif\"width=\"100%\"><br \/>  <br \/>  What is it exactly that crosses someone\u2019s mind amid the suicidal act of crossing an actual highway? <br \/>  <br \/>  <br \/>  <B>9. Politico-religious propaganda being a pillar of the political system.<\/B><br \/>  <br \/>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/1d9841566cb6ccccb8f0c3eb87307499\/tumblr_o0rm3c3tmp1tsf68ao1_400.gif\"width=\"100%\"><br \/>  <br \/>  It is just sad to witness how Lebanese politicians feed upon religious propaganda and carefully camouflaged hate speech to fuel their supporters\u2019 energy [and awaken dormant conflicts] whenever their interests and\/or reputation are at stake. What\u2019s even worse is that this discourse has become so inherent to Lebanese politics that the population has become practically oblivious to its destructive nature.<br \/>  <br \/>  <br \/>  <B>10. Having an entire population of self-proclaimed influencers.<\/B><br \/>  <br \/>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/beyondgrowthagency.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Influencers-GIF.gif\"width=\"100%\"><br \/>  <br \/>  Where do most Lebanese people get the guts\/confidence\/whatever it is to label their own self as \u2018influencer\u2019 or \u2018public figure\u2019? In what way are your designer slippers adding value to pop culture? How about you leave it up to people to decide how profoundly they are influenced by your irrelevant brand endorsements before you go on assigning big titles to yourself?
