{"id":56670,"date":"2018-11-01T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-11-01T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/56670\/roula-yaacoubs-husband-found-not-guilty-after-beating-her-to-death"},"modified":"2023-08-30T05:16:26","modified_gmt":"2023-08-30T05:16:26","slug":"roula-yaacoubs-husband-found-not-guilty-after-beating-her-to-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/en\/56670\/roula-yaacoubs-husband-found-not-guilty-after-beating-her-to-death\/","title":{"rendered":"Roula Yaacoub&#8217;s Husband Found Not Guilty After Beating Her To Death"},"content":{"rendered":"Five years after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/l\/26538\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">violent murder of Roula Yaacoub<\/a>, the 33-year old victim of domestic abuse and mother of five, a Criminal Court in North Lebanon issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lbcgroup.tv\/news\/d\/lebanon-news\/408409\/court-issues-verdict-in-case-of-roula-yaacoubs-mur\/en\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">verdict<\/a> on the accused suspect, her husband Karam Al-Bazi. He was acquitted and cleared of all murder charges against him due to what the court deemed to be a \u201clack of evidence\u201d.  <br \/>  <br \/>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/56670.png\"><br \/>  <br \/>  Shortly before Yaacoub\u2019s passing, one of her daughters had reportedly fled the house to inform neighbors that her father was beating her mother with a stick. Sadly, the horrors witnessed by the daughters and the abuse they had all lived through for years had not been enough evidence for the Court.<br \/>  <br \/>  A similar verdict had been passed shortly right after Yaacoub\u2019s death clearing the husband of murder charges after what was deemed to be an inconclusive autopsy report and witness statements, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-lebanon-protest-women\/lebanese-march-against-domestic-violence-in-rare-non-partisan-protest-idUSBREA270LS20140308\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a>. <br \/>  <br \/>  This, along with the murder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/l\/48143\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">Manal Assi<\/a> and Cristelle Abou Chakra, sparked enough public outrage and led to protests resulting in the approval of Lebanon\u2019s first law against domestic violence.<br \/>  <br \/>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/56670-1.png\"><br \/>  <small>Yaacoub&#8217;s mom clings to a photo of her murdered daughter.<\/small> <br \/>  <br \/>  Nearly five years later, these efforts seem to have gone to waste and it feels as though the victims of domestic violence are being killed all over again with the issuing of the verdict in Yaacoub\u2019s murder. <br \/>  <br \/>  Even long after their passing, the burden of proof seems to lie on the victims. Not only do they live in a country that fails to provide minimal protection from domestic abuse, but they should also make sure that there is enough evidence they were brutally murdered, because being beaten to death in front of their families and children is apparently not sufficient. <br \/>  <br \/>  There are no national statistics on domestic violence in Lebanon. But according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-middle-east-26502445\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">a BBC report<\/a>, campaigners say that one woman is killed by her husband every month on average, while thousands are subjected to physical or verbal abuse every year.<br \/>  <br \/>  Local domestic violence and abuse NGO <a href=\"<URL>&#8221; target=&#8221;_new&#8221;><Linked Text><\/a> has announced that they will appeal the verdict.     <figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex
