{"id":60437,"date":"2020-07-24T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-07-24T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/60437\/awesome-news-the-gems-are-back"},"modified":"2023-08-30T04:25:34","modified_gmt":"2023-08-30T04:25:34","slug":"awesome-news-the-gems-are-back","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/en\/60437\/awesome-news-the-gems-are-back\/","title":{"rendered":"Awesome News: The GEMS Are Back!"},"content":{"rendered":"You&#8217;ve probably heard about the very cool <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/l\/56027\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">group of volunteers that have been cleaning up Lebanese beaches<\/a> for nearly two years now. <br \/>  <br \/>  While they took a brief break a couple of months ago due to the social and financial situation in the country, alongside the pandemic, we&#8217;re thrilled to announce that the <b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/l\/56027\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">GEMs<\/a><\/b> are finally back!<br \/>  <br \/>  GEM, which stands for Green Environment Movement, was founded back in August 2018 when a random tweet about cleaning up beaches picked up traction and eventually became a regular weekly activity for many volunteers from all over Lebanon. <br \/>  <br \/>    <blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">So guys, a few years ago, I suggested we clean up beaches. Get a group of volunteers and move around Lebanon one beach at a time and pick up the trash.<br><br>Basically, nobody responded. <br><br>So again, anyone want to start this with me?<\/p>\u2014 R.K (@leb_obs) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/leb_obs\/status\/1016571215895519232?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 10, 2018<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>  <br \/>  <br \/>  Starting with only seven volunteers, they managed to pick up more than a ton of trash in just three weeks. And now they need your help again as they try to bring their lovely initiative to life. <br \/>  <br \/>  You can meet them at Ghazir Beach this Sunday, July 26, at 9 AM for a clean-up.
