Election is a strong word for what occurs in Lebanon as warlords, politicians, and parliamentarians often reach pre-approved agreements on who earns the seat before ever holding a vote. <br \/>  <br \/>  Regardless, this year, two women, Tracy Chamoun and May Rihani, have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sharikawalaken.media\/2022\/09\/06\/\u0645\u0631\u0634\u062d\u062a\u0627\u0646-\u0625\u0644\u0649-\u0627\u0644\u0627\u0646\u062a\u062e\u0627\u0628\u0627\u062a-\u0627\u0644\u0631\u0626\u0627\u0633\u064a\u0629-\u0645\u0646-\u0647\u0645\/\"target=_new\">announced their candidacy<\/a>. Lebanon\u2019s first-ever female candidate was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/l\/41431\"target=_new\">Nadine Moussa in 2014<\/a>, a time that marked the beginning of the 2-year presidential vacuum.<br \/>  <br \/>  Here\u2019s what we know about the two female candidates:<br \/>  <br \/>  <b>Tracy Chamoun<\/b><br \/>  <br \/>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/64143.png\"><br \/>  <br \/>  A former Ambassador to Jordan and granddaughter of former president Camille Chamoun, Tracy Chamoun was <a href=\"https:\/\/today.lorientlejour.com\/article\/1309745\/former-ambassador-tracy-chamoun-declares-presidential-candidacy.html\"target=_new\">the first woman to join the 2022 presidential race<\/a>. Her first book \u201cAu Nom Du P\u00e8re\u201d, which recounts her experience during the Lebanese Civil War and highlights her relationship with her late father, was awarded the prestigious Prix Verite in 1991.<br \/>  <br \/>  Coming from a family of politicians, Chamoun claims to have an overall understanding of the political playground in Lebanon. During a press conference held in August, she promised to stand in the face of Lebanon\u2019s \u201cfeudal political system\u201d and work towards \u201ca modern democracy\u201d.<br \/>  <br \/>  <br \/>  <b>May Rihani<\/b><br \/>  <br \/>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/64143-1.png\"><br \/>  <br \/>  US-based Lebanese poet and writer May Rihani was <a href=\"https:\/\/today.lorientlejour.com\/article\/1310863\/may-rihani-announces-presidential-candidacy-my-reference-point-is-the-constitution.html<br \/>  &#8220;target=_new&#8221;>the second woman to announce her candidacy<\/a> for the 2022 Lebanese presidential elections. She is the daughter of Albert Rihani and niece of Ameen Rihani, who are prominent Lebanese-American literary figures. <br \/>  <br \/>  She is no stranger to international development projects with multiple international awards under her belt (Juliet Hollister Award in 2012, Gibran International Prize in 2008, and Said Akl Award in 2002).<br \/>  <br \/>  She runs the \u201cKahlil Gibran Chair for Values and Peace\u201d at the University of Maryland. She has also worked in over 70 countries, serving as co-chair of the United Nations Girls\u2019 Education Initiative. <br \/>  <br \/>  Although women\u2019s involvement in politics is a refreshing sight, the country\u2019s deep-seated political issues laced with patriarchal issues will undoubtedly be hurdles. Two months ago, the Lebanese parliament was slammed by Amnesty International for the sexual harassment of MP Cynthia Zarazir.     <figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default
