Among the most breathtaking of these historical sites is the Smar Jbeil Citadel, a majestic fort located on a hilltop in Batroun, northern Lebanon.<br \/>  <br \/>  Dating back to ancient times, the Smar Jbeil Citadel has witnessed centuries of wars and battles. Yet, it stands resolute and magnificent, offering visitors an opportunity to experience the grandeur of a bygone era. The citadel derives its name from the Phoenician language, meaning \u201cthe guardian of Jbeil Citadel.\u201d<br \/>  <br \/>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/65115-3.png\"> <br \/>  <br \/>  Once inside the castle walls, one is struck by the sight of arches, courtyards, and staircases that combine different architectural styles, each bearing testament to the various civilizations that once ruled this land. The citadel was under Persian control from 555 B.C. until it fell into the hands of Alexander the Great in 331 B.C. Later, it was briefly under Roman control around 63 B.C. During the Middle Ages, it became a refuge for the Maronites and their army who used it as a shelter against Byzantine persecution in the 7th century.<br \/>  <br \/>  In the 9th century, the castle fell into the hands of Abbasid forces, who held it till the arrival of the crusaders a few hundred years later. The crusader forces completely rebuilt the fort, demolishing its ancient walls and replacing them with more modern construction. After their eventual defeat of crusaders in the region, the citadel was captured by the Mamluks, who held it till their defeat by the Ottomans in 1516.<br \/>  <br \/>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/65115-4.png\"> <br \/>  <br \/>  The citadel is home to many unique features that make it an exceptional destination for history enthusiasts. For example, carved-in-the-rock wells and subterranean tunnels connect the castle to nearby valleys, while Roman statues and a circular theater add to its grandeur. The Crusaders built cellars and crosses next to its towers, and a church was built to the east of the citadel. Well eyed visitors can also spot an Ottoman constructed mosque-turned-residence also surrounding the castle.<br \/>  <br \/>  Many visitors come to Batroun\u2019s upscale downtown district for shopping and dining, but those who venture out to the Smar Jbeil Citadel are rewarded with an experience that is truly unforgettable. From atop the castle, visitors can enjoy an impressive panoramic view of the city and the Mediterranean coast from Jbeil to Tripoli on its western side, as well as the mountains of Lebanon on its eastern side, including the famous Cedars of God.<br \/>  <br \/>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/65115-5.png\"> <br \/>  <br \/>  The Smar Jbeil Citadel is a fascinating testament to Lebanon\u2019s rich history and cultural heritage. This majestic structure stands tall despite centuries of wars and battles and remains a beacon of resilience and strength.
