Step back in time with us to one of the most beautiful eras in Beirut&#8217;s history and explore the tales of <em>abadayet<\/em> and their coffee shops in a new episode of our  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/en\/tag\/beiruts-collective-memory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Beirut&#8217;s <strong>Collective<\/strong> Memory<\/a> series with the unmatched narrator Tarek Kawa! <\/strong><\/p>    <p><\/p>    <figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/46-\u0642\u0628\u0636\u0627\u064a\u0627\u062a-\u0628\u064a\u0631\u0648\u062a-6.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>    <p><\/p>    <p><\/p>    <p><\/p>    <p>A cafe owned by an <em>abaday<\/em> was not like any regular cafe owned by an ordinary person; the atmosphere was different, its patrons were different, its walls were immaculately painted&#8230;<\/p>    <p><\/p>    <figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"470\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-07-13-at-3.00.55-PM.jpeg\" alt=\"\u0642\u0628\u0636\u0627\u064a\u0627\u062a \u0628\u064a\u0631\u0648\u062a\" class=\"wp-image-673077\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-07-13-at-3.00.55-PM.jpeg 720w, https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-07-13-at-3.00.55-PM-600x392.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-07-13-at-3.00.55-PM-250x163.jpeg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/figure>    <p><\/p>    <p><\/p>    <p>For instance, all the Basta&#8217;s cafes were either supporters of or owned by <a href=\"https:\/\/ar.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%D8%B5%D8%A7%D8%A6%D8%A8_%D8%B3%D9%84%D8%A7%D9%85\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Saeb Salam<\/a> and therefore, they were not just regular cafes, they were election centers for Salam&#8230; with his photo always plastered on the wall. Another example was Michel Saliba&#8217;s cafe in Mazraa which was closely aligned with Henri Pharaoun, and always with Pharaoun was Naseem Majdalani. Similarly, Ahwet el Gemmayze was established and owned by the <em>abaday<\/em> Al-Osta Baz, and it was considered to be in Pierre Gemayel&#8217;s favor.<\/p>    <p><\/p>    <p><\/p>    <figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/46846141_1966605426976517_2017655316446969856_n.jpg\" alt=\"\u0645\u0642\u0647\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0644\u0627\u0645 \u0633\u0646\u0629 1968\" class=\"wp-image-673060\" width=\"840\" height=\"572\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/46846141_1966605426976517_2017655316446969856_n.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/46846141_1966605426976517_2017655316446969856_n-600x409.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/46846141_1966605426976517_2017655316446969856_n-250x170.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/46846141_1966605426976517_2017655316446969856_n-768x523.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Qahwet al Salam &#8211; 1968<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>    <p><\/p>    <p><\/p>    <p>And the cafe that wasn&#8217;t owned by an <em>abaday<\/em> was mostly a cafe that supported the winner: election seasons would come, a new person&#8217;s photo would be plastered up and if he succeeds, they&#8217;d keep his picture up, if he fails&#8230; they&#8217;d remove the picture. The rest of the time, it was all about which horse was primed to win the race, what were the instructions for Sunday? Who was the jockey and who knew him? The guest would be either someone seeking a favor or another<em> abaday<\/em> from a different area coming to introduce himself or pay respects. Now, depending on who was visiting the cafe, people would know whether or not he was close to the <em>abaday<\/em>. If he was a friend, most of the patrons would stand to greet him, then they would back off to give them privacy. The service also completely changed when the <em>abaday<\/em> had a visitor: the brand new tea cups would come out, a fancy copper jug and a shiny new tray, a cup filled with hot water alongside the tea to keep the cup itself warm&#8230;all of that and more. Now, Elias Al-Halabi was different from the rest of the<em> abaday<\/em>s because it was said that he was responsible for the death of forty men. But it is important to mention that these forty men were not normal people, they were either criminals, thieves, spies, or even perpetrators. So, they considered Elias Al-Halabi to be the vigilante of the <em>abaday<\/em>s, taking revenge and the law into his own hands.<\/p>    <p><\/p>    <p>Halabi was known to be noble, generous, extremely handsome, tall, tanned&#8230; famous for his mustache that &#8220;a falcon could perch on&#8221;.<\/p>    <p><\/p>    <p><\/p>    <figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"662\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/tumblr_mguzyxky561qhij65o1_1280-1024x662.jpg\" alt=\"\u0642\u0647\u0627\u0648\u064a \u0628\u064a\u0631\u0648\u062a \" class=\"wp-image-673066\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/tumblr_mguzyxky561qhij65o1_1280-1024x662.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/tumblr_mguzyxky561qhij65o1_1280-600x388.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/tumblr_mguzyxky561qhij65o1_1280-250x162.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/tumblr_mguzyxky561qhij65o1_1280-768x496.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/tumblr_mguzyxky561qhij65o1_1280.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>    <p><\/p>    <p><\/p>    <p>Of the many tales about Al Halabi, it was said that he once discovered someone who was an agent for the French army, working to give them news about the rebels. He managed to capture him in Mazraa and carried out a public trial which ended with the spy\u2019s execution. Another time, he was having a late night at Ahwet Saliba in Mazraa when he heard. He was one of the many <em>abaday<\/em>s who, the more news of him circulated, the more the stories were exaggerated. <\/p>    <p><\/p>    <p><\/p>    <figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"552\" height=\"348\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/48383498_1206627299488651_5589337780359528448_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-673070\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/48383498_1206627299488651_5589337780359528448_n.jpg 552w, https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/48383498_1206627299488651_5589337780359528448_n-250x158.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 552px) 100vw, 552px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Qahwet Saliba &#8211; Mazraa <\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>    <p><\/p>    <p><\/p>    <p>But even his death was marked by a strange incident, with people saying that he helped them both during his life and during his death. Here\u2019s what happened: since Halabi was well loved by the masses, many attended his funeral. Those who stepped out to meet his funeral procession felt saved by him.
