But sometimes pictures can speak a thousand words, so let&#8217;s talk about the first ever photo taken of Beirut.<\/p>    <p><\/p>    <p>Historian Charles Hayek recently posted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/C40KaYVMXRV\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">video<\/a> on Instagram showcasing the picture, which dates back to 1840.<\/p>    <p><\/p>   <iframe title=\"Embedded Instagram Post\" allowtransparency=\"true\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"532\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/C40KaYVMXRV\/embed\/\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"background: white; max-width: 540px; width: calc(100% - 2px); border-radius: 3px; border: 1px solid rgb(219, 219, 219); box-shadow: none; display: block; margin: 12px 0px 12px !important; min-width: 326px; padding: 0px;\"><\/iframe>   <p><\/p>    <p>The rare photo shows a marvelous view of Beirut in 1840, overlooking the city&#8217;s buildings with the Amir Assaf mosque located in the center.<\/p>    <p><\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-took-this-historical-photo\">Who took this historical photo?<\/h3>    <p><\/p>    <p>In 1940, the painter and photographer Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Guillaume Verschaffelt, along with the French photographer Horace Vernet and his son Charles-Marie Bouton, visited Beirut during their voyage to the Ottoman Empire. They traveled from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onefineart.com\/articles\/sarrafian-history-photography-lebanon\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Egypt to Jerusalem<\/a>, passing through Beirut and capturing rare photographs of the cities during that era. Although the original &#8220;daguerreotype&#8221; image was lost, a printed copy remains, which is considered the first and oldest photograph of Beirut.<\/p>    <p><\/p>   <div class=\"lazy-load-block-container\"><img style=\"width: auto; height: auto;\" class=\"lazy-load-block\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/GJT4rknXEAAxwhK.jpg\" alt=\"\u0623\u0648\u0644 \u0635\u0648\u0631\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u062a\u0642\u0637\u062a \u0644\u0628\u064a\u0631\u0648\u062a\" \/><\/div>   <p><\/p>    <p>During that era, the daguerreotype was the first type of photography available to the public. This technique involved using a sheet of copper plated with a thin layer of silver to produce highly detailed images without the need for a negative image.<\/p>    <p><\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-else-has-been-photographed\">What else has been photographed?<\/h3>    <p><\/p>    <p>After Vernier and Verschaffelt, the photographer <a href=\"https:\/\/heritage.bnf.fr\/bibliothequesorient\/en\/girault-prangey-ara\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey<\/a> also paid the region a visit. He was one of the early users of the daguerreotype camera and became famous for his remarkable photographs of the East.
