Fifty years ago in 1975, the Mediterranean sea off the coast of Beirut became the final resting place for Mal\u00e9v Hungarian Airlines Flight 240. <\/p>    <p><\/p>    <p>The aircraft, a Soviet-built <strong>Tupolev Tu-154<\/strong> passenger jet, was making its final approach to the city&#8217;s airport when it suddenly vanished from the sky, taking all 60 people on board with it.<\/p>    <p><\/p>    <figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"825\" height=\"548\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/malev.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-762755\" style=\"width:557px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/malev.jpg 825w, https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/malev-600x399.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/malev-250x166.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.beirut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/malev-768x510.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 825px) 100vw, 825px\" \/><\/figure>    <div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-cold-war-puzzle\">A Cold War Puzzle <\/h3>    <p>In the absence of official answers, a slew of theories and rumors quickly filled the silence, fueled by the tense political climate of the Cold War. <\/p>    <p><\/p>    <p><strong>A Deliberate Attack?<\/strong> <\/p>    <p>One of the most persistent theories is that the plane was shot down. British radar operators stationed in Cyprus reportedly tracked unidentified fighter jets in the vicinity at the time of the crash. <\/p>    <p><\/p>    <p>Suspicions have been cast over the years on enemy air forces, though no government has ever acknowledged any involvement.<\/p>    <p><\/p>    <p><strong>A Case of Mistaken Identity?<\/strong> <\/p>    <p>Another theory suggests the flight was targeted in a case of catastrophic error.
