As older institutions downsized or shut down, Deir El Salib absorbed long-stay patients from across the country and gradually became one of Lebanon\u2019s primary custodial psychiatric facilities. The Franciscan Sisters of the Cross took over its administration, a role they still hold today.<\/p>    <p><\/p>    <p>For decades, the hospital functioned as a national safety net for people with severe or chronic mental health conditions, many of whom had nowhere else to go.<\/p>    <p><\/p>   <iframe title=\"Embedded Instagram Post\" allowtransparency=\"true\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"532\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DRwTtUUCpYs\/embed\/\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"background: white; max-width: 540px; width: calc(100% - 2px); border-radius: 3px; border: 1px solid rgb(219, 219, 219); box-shadow: none; display: block; margin: 12px 0px 12px !important; min-width: 326px; padding: 0px;\"><\/iframe>   <p><\/p>    <p>By the early 2000s, Deir El Salib was one of the largest psychiatric institutions in the region, housing hundreds of patients and maintaining long-term wards, rehabilitation units, and nursing services. In the 2010s, the hospital reported a capacity of approximately 1,000 beds.<br><\/p>    <div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lebanon-s-cascading-crises-dramatically-changed-the-picture\">Lebanon\u2019s cascading crises dramatically changed the picture<\/h3>    <p>The 2019 economic collapse, currency devaluation, medicine shortages, and mass emigration of healthcare workers hit these kinds of institutions especially hard. Deir El Salib\u2019s operating costs soared while state subsidies remained symbolic. Yet its importance has only grown. With mental health needs rising across the country and community-based services still limited, Deir El Salib continues to care for people who would otherwise be abandoned.<\/p>    <div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-these-institutions-matter\">Why these institutions matter<\/h3>    <p>Deir El Salib matters today because it exposes both the possibilities and failures of mental health care in Lebanon. It embodies a long humanitarian tradition, but it also reflects the urgent need for modern, sustainable psychiatric infrastructure.<\/p>    <p><\/p>    <p>Preserving it is not just about honoring its past.
