Despite its <a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/tentativelists\/6900\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UNESCO \u201cenhanced protection\u201d status<\/a>, granted to safeguard it during conflict, the fortress could not withstand the scale of destruction.<br><\/p>    <p><\/p>   <iframe title=\"Embedded Instagram Post\" allowtransparency=\"true\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"532\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DZAC-6Bklkk\/embed\/\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"background: white; max-width: 540px; width: calc(100% - 2px); border-radius: 3px; border: 1px solid rgb(219, 219, 219); box-shadow: none; display: block; margin: 12px 0px 12px !important; min-width: 326px; padding: 0px;\"><\/iframe>   <p><\/p>    <p><\/p>    <p><\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-little-bit-about-the-fortress\">A little bit about the fortress:<\/h3>    <p><\/p>    <p>Known as one of the most well-preserved examples of medieval castles in the region, Qalaat al-Shaqif (Beaufort Castle) was built by the Crusaders in the 12th century, likely under the Kingdom of Jerusalem. With a name meaning \u201cCastle of the High Rock\u201d and known as Beaufort to the Crusaders, the fortress changed hands repeatedly over the centuries. It was captured by Saladin in 1187, later regained, and eventually taken by the Mamluks in 1268. In the 17th century, it was brought under the control of Emir Fakhreddine II before losing its strategic importance under Ottoman rule. <\/p>    <p><\/p>    <p>In modern history, it was occupied during the 1982 invasion until the <em>ta7reer<\/em> in 2000.<br><\/p>    <p><\/p>    <p>Qalaat al-Shaqif isn\u2019t just another ruin.
