Woman Shot 15 Times By Her Husband In Borj al-Brajneh

Horrifying news this morning as we report the murder of a woman who was found shot in her home in Borj Al-Barajneh refugee camp. Najah Obaid was reportedly shot 15 times by her husband for sharing some aid she had received with her neighbors.

It was also revealed that Najah was the breadwinner of the family, working as a cleaning lady and supporting her family and unemployed husband.

In Lebanon, women are repeatedly battered and abused in their homes, and then they are killed in their homes; and yet little changes on an institutional level. Despite recent changes in the laws, enforcement has been weak and lacking a lot of framework. This, exacerbated by the fact that religious courts hold most of the power over women’s personal status laws, results in whirlwinds of violence and murders. Najah’s name now joins many other women who we have failed to protect, both as a government and as a people.
