How To Get A Civil Marriage In Cyprus

In order to facilitate the required back-and-forth document transfers, most Lebanese citizens have their civil marriages in Nicosia, because that’s where the Lebanese embassy is in Cyprus. There are two main things you need to be aware of: the documents you need to get, and the actual procedure. We broke them down into 2 points, each with sub-points.

Civil registry record: إخراج قيد فردي
Family registry record: إخراج قيد عائلي
The notary: كاتب العدل
The ministry of justice: وزارة العدل
The ministry of foreign affairs: وزارة الخارجية

Documents you need:

– 2 copies of the original civil registry records (2 for you and 2 for your partner)

– 2 copies of the original family registry records (2 for you and 2 for your partner)

– All the documents should be translated to English by a sworn translator, signed and sealed

– Shengen visa issue:

If both you and your partner have a Shengen visa, you need to have the following documents with you:
– 1 copy of the civil registry record (in both Arabic and English)
– 1 copy of the family registry record (in both Arabic and English)
– Both documents need to be signed and sealed by (in this particular order): the notary, the ministry of justice, the ministry of foreign affairs, the consulate general of the Republic of Cyprus in Lebanon.

If both you and your partner do not have a Shengen visa, you need to do the following:
– Get the visa application paperwork done in addition to all of the above
– Bring the additional copies of the family registry records (in both Arabic and English).
– Get the travel tickets, insurance and hotel reservation
– Check the visa requirements or contact the embassy of Cyprus in Lebanon

Procedure:

1. Contact Nicosia’s municipality (0035722797238) to allocate a date and time for your ceremony – make sure you set a date after you secure all of the aforementioned documents.

2. Get to municipality at 8 AM on the day of your wedding and apply for a marriage by special license. You should provide them with all the required documents and the passports of two witnesses – they can provide them for you if needed.

3. Be on time at the assigned date and time to celebrate your civil marriage. A marriage certificate will be delivered, ask for several copies:
– 1 for the Lebanese embassy in Cyprus
– 1 for each embassy you want to register your marriage with
– 1 copy for personal keepsake, and keep the original copy of your marriage license with you

4. Legalize your marriage with your spouse in the following steps:

– Visit the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to legalize all the documents
– Visit the Lebanese embassy in Nicosia, where you need:
A. The original marriage certificate legalized by the ministry of foreign affairs
B. 1 copy of the civil registry record and one copy of the family registry record (in both Arabic and English). Both need to be signed and sealed by (in order) the notary and the ministry of foreign affairs.
C. 2 photocopies of every document recto-verso
D. 1 photocopy of the first 4 pages of the passport

The Lebanese Embassy will contact you a month later after assigning you a number for your diplomatic case.

Finally when all of the above is done you will receive your new family registry record, a new civil registry record, and a Lebanese marriage certificate. Mabrouk!
