Something You May Have Forgotten: Fairuz Sued Madonna In 1993

In one of the most notorious musical theft cases of the 90s, Lebanese queen of song Fairuz sued American singer Madonna for sampling her famous Easter chant “Al Yawm Ulliqa Alal Khashaba” from 1962 on her 1992 single “Erotica”.

The Easter chant tells the story of the crucifixion of Jesus and is played on Good Friday every year. Madonna layered the lyric “put your hands all over my body” with Fairuz’s voice singing about the crucifixion.

Madge and Fairuz settled out of court for $2.5 million, and the album was subsequently banned in Lebanon.

Wish they could have battled it out with a sing-off.
