Lebanese filmmaker Nadine Labaki’s compelling movie
Caphernaum didn’t win the Oscar category for Foreign Language.
Up against Colombian
Birds of Passage, Danish
The Guilty, German
Never Look Away, Japanese
Shoplifters, Kazakhstan’s
Ayka, Mexican
Roma, Polish
Cold War and South Korean
Burning, the documentary-style movie lost to Roma.
Needless to say,
Caphernaum has already won our hearts and received global critical appraisal. It is a major achievement for Nadine Labaki to be the first Arab female director nominated by the Academy, aside from the recognition and admiration she received from
media mogul Oprah alone.
Oscar winner or not, Caphernaum is a must-watch tear-jerker.
