Lebanon fell yet another place this year in the 2020 World Press Freedom Index according to the annual rankings generated by Reporters Without Borders.
The country, which stood at the 100th position in 2018 and 101st in 2019, now stands at 102nd. This comes after a particularly tense year in Lebanese press freedoms, wherein many have been speaking out against what they call unjust media censorship.
The top countries? Consistently leading on the environmental and human development indexes, it’s no surprise that Norway, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, and Netherlands are ranked one through five. Jamaica and Costa Rica follow, and the holder of rank #180? None other than North Korea. Congrats, Turkmenistan, you are just 179th.
Published annually, this index assesses the freedoms that media can exercise in 180 countries around the world factoring in media independence, freedom, and transparency.
