Citizens Gather In Front Of OMT Tayouneh To Receive Their Transactions In Dollars

Earlier today, photos and videos of a big crowd in front of OMT/Western Union, Tayyouneh (the main branch) were making the rounds on social media.

These people were gathered on the street in hopes that they would receive their financial transactions in dollars. This comes after BDL’s controversial circular which stated that non-banking institutions can no longer give out dollars to customers, and would have to settle all transfers coming from abroad in Lebanese Lira at the market exchange rate. Today is the last day people can receive dollars from the main branch, hence the crowds.

In light of the coronavirus outbreak, this poses a threat to these peoples’ lives, but one that is not as deadly as the monetary policies currently running the country and driving people to their despair.
