This is exactly why we need more women in power.

Earlier today, members of the Lebanese Cabinet held a meeting in the Grand Serail to approve the long-awaited basket of subsidized goods in an attempt to control the inflated prices of basic items in the market.

It is important to note that the meeting was comprised of seven men who took on the task of selecting which items need to be subsidized and which are not as essential, because the end result was simply ridiculous.

Who are these men?

Prime Minister Hassan Diab; Ministers Raoul Nehme, Abbas Mortada, and Imad Hoballah; Central Bank Governor Riad Salameh; and Advisor to the Prime Minister Khodr Taleb and George Chalhoub.

Together, all seven of these men compiled a list of 300 items to be subsidized in the market, but somehow failed to include period pads at a time during which period poverty is prevailing and many women lack the resources to purchase sanitary pads.

What they did not forget, naturally, are men’s razors.

As the dollar exchange rate continues to increase, menstrual pads have become way too expensive, and for many women, in-affordable. Unfortunately, they are a commodity, rather than a luxury and should have been considered among the basket of subsidized items.

Meanwhile, while our cabinet fails to recognize the basic needs of women, Dawrati are taking on a huge role in fighting period poverty by making menstrual supplies accessible for everyone.
