Devastating Beirut Blast Leaves At Least 78 Dead, Thousands Injured

August 4, 2020 6:07 PM. That was the moment an uncontrolled fire in Beirut’s port resulted in a large explosion that rocked our beloved country killing at least 78 people and injuring 4,000.

With conflicting reports rising regarding the storage units that had exploded, Lebanon’s Prime Minister Hassan Diab later said that the culprit was 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate that had been confiscated in the warehouse at least six years ago.

The port is destroyed.

Every quarter in the city is in shambles.

Streets are filled with glass.

That is nothing compared to the human losses. The current death toll stands at 78 and is expected to dramatically rise. 4,000 people are injured and awaiting treatment at Beirut’s hospitals that are already crippled by COVID-19 and an economic crisis.

There are no words for what we are all feeling right now. We are heartbroken. Our condolences to the families of those lost, speedy recovery to the injured, and a way out of this nightmare.
