Bassil On Ammonium Nitrate At Beirut Port: “the question is not why it was there, but how it was ignited”

In an interview with BBC, when Gebran Bassil was asked about the bleak tale of negligence that left 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate casually stored at the port, he responded with: “the question is not what it was doing there, but what ignited it.”

Bassil also added that the storage of the ammonium nitrate for so many years is unacceptable, and that there will be “accountability” for those who are deemed responsible.

We, on the other hand, believe the question is: “what kind of government leaves highly explosive material lying unsafely at the capital’s port for ages with no consideration of the risks?”

Exactly, the same kind of government that stole our money, placed us under the mercy of the worst economic crisis, and failed to provide us with electricity and water after years of inefficiency and corruption.

Caught between the acts of raging at the political elite and coping with the aftermath of the monstrous explosion that struck our beloved city, we have no words to describe our pain.
