Detainees In Roumieh Prison Announce An Open Hunger Strike In Protest Of Poor Health Conditions

Detainees in Roumieh Prison have announced an open hunger strike to protest poor health conditions, reported local news channel Al Jadeed.

Roumieh’s prison, notorious for overcrowding and a lack of adequate medical care for prisoners, has been witnessing a sharp increase in Coronavirus cases and deaths.

Earlier in September, thirteen detainees in Roumieh prison contracted the virus which caused panic among the families of detainees who feared disaster should quick measures not be taken, especially considering the overcrowded nature of the prison and non-existent safety measures.

A video showing dozens of detainees packed in a hall, none wearing masks, with one saying: “We are dying inside the prison, There is no food or medicine, there is no protection here.” was also leaked earlier at the time.

The state clearly cannot provide safe, hygienic, and medically-sound care for its detainees creating a heartbreaking reality for many who are at this point dying in the Lebanese prison system.

There has yet to be a reaction to the news of the hunger strike from Lebanese officials.
