Lebanese Woman In Critical Condition After Being Stabbed By Husband

Almost a week after Zeina Kanjo’s horrific murder, another domestic violence case arises.

Lara, the mother of a 5-year-old daughter, was leaving her shift at Sayyidet Loubnan Hospital in Jounieh when she was brutally attacked by her husband. Lara suffered a hard blow to the head as well as several stab wounds in her liver, chest, back, and shoulders. The stab wounds severely punctured her lungs, and she is currently in the ICU fighting for her life.

Her lawyer, Jaafar Shahimi, confirms that this was not an assault, but rather an attempted murder and that her husband has since been arrested. Shahimi adds that Lara has been fighting for alimony payments in the Jaafari religious court for herself and her daughter for over a year now. Her husband filed a complaint against her, refusing divorce in order to avoid the payments. The Coronavirus pandemic has since halted the investigations and judiciary decisions regarding Lara’s case.

Lara is currently fighting for her life due to the lack of protection provided to women and girls in such devastating occurrences. She, like many other women, fell victim to the discriminatory laws and inconsiderate religious courts that could have easily prevented such atrocious acts of violence.
