Samer Khouzami Faces Ignorant Comments For Wearing Heels

After a recent post shared on his Instagram account, make up artist and business guru Samer Khouzami found himself subject to an onslaught of ignorant and homophobic comments by followers. The reason? He is wearing heels in the photo.

One of the biggest names in the beauty industry, Khouzami has his own line of products and signature techniques that should bring pride to not only Lebanon, but the Arab region as a whole. His success as an artist extends to all corners of the world, yet people seemed more caught up with what he enjoys wearing.

The result was deeply archaic, gendered, and homophobic comments left on his post:

Khouzami was subject to ridicule and mockery, all for the harmless act of choosing to enjoy a shoe. Someone might want to inform the ignorant homophobes leaving comments that high heels were initially invented for men, and just because you enjoy abiding by gender constructs, doesn’t mean others have to.

And it wasn’t just comments, local “media” outlets like Lebanonfiles.com and LebanonDebate.com also took it upon themselves to critique Khouzami, referring to his choice as an “abomination”. It’s best you stay focused on the current economic crash that has left thousands hungry, AKA a real abomination.

The reality is that our society remains, for the most part, enclosed in its stereotypically sexist and homophobic bubble in which men and women are confined to pointless expectations. Topics of gender and sexuality are also often regarded as taboo, further slowing down our evolution as a society.

Samer Khouzami’s choice to wear heels is his choice and his form of expression that makes him comfortable. No part of his choice calls for your opinions.
