Stolen Manhole Covers Cause Road Safety Concerns In Lebanon

As crime escalates and people become more desperate to make ends meet a few months into 2021, they have taken to theft of electric cables and manhole covers to sell as scrap metal for profit.

This unfortunately has the possibility to cause severe injuries and deaths as cars and people fall into the exposed holes in the ground. Most recently, an individual fell in to an exposed manhole in the Jnah neighborhood of Beirut, after which Civil Defense units arrived at the scene to help him out. These exposed holes are also effectively death traps for cars, and are anticipated to cause accidents should they not be handled.

Road safety NGO YASA has called upon law enforcement to punish thieves to the fullest extent of the law due to the sheer danger of the situation.

As living conditions continue to deteriorate across the country, Lebanon has witnessed a sharp increase in crime rates. In 2020 alone, incidents of burglary increased by 20%, car theft by 46%, and murders by a whopping 103% in comparison to 2019.
