Large Number of Fish Found Dead In Qaraoun Lake

After the sticky black tar that washed up on several of Lebanon’s shores last February, Lebanon faces yet another ecological problem.

Yesterday, a horrific scene of thousands of dead fish floating atop Qaraoun’s Lake in Bekaa was making the rounds on social media.

This comes as a result of the lake becoming contaminated by sewage water, along with the awful pollution that has plagued the area. The Litani River Authority announced this morning that a team of environmental experts have started cleaning up the lake and removing the fish.

Years of neglect and governmental corruption have left large bodies of water like the Qaraoun Lake and the Litani River horrifically polluted. The lake’s water irrigates about 30% of the country’s land.
