Cases Of Food Poisoning On The Rise Amidst Fuel Shortages

According to Annahar newspaper, cases of food poisoning are rising at an alarming rate in Lebanon. Compared to previous years, the numbers have skyrocketed now with the unbearable heatwave paired with frequent power cuts.

Dr. Tharwat Zahran, an ER doctor at AUBMC, said that 4-5 cases of food poisoning enter the ER per day. She also adds that the compounded crises have left hospitals ill-equipped to handle such cases, and they are resorting to treating food poisoning in the ER due to the unavailability of hospital beds.

Dr. Zahran says the majority of the patients are coming in with Salmonella and E. coli infections. Last week, Dr. Issmat Kassem, a food safety expert, published a report showing the amount of E. coli in store-bought cheese.

The aftermath of this ongoing crisis has been weighing heavily on the medical and pharmaceutical sector, now that hospitals are unable to treat patients and pharmacies no longer have any medicatons in stock.
