EU council members reportedly told Reuters that they have updated the list of epidemiologically safe countries, removing a total of 6 countries including Lebanon due to the increasing COVID-19 cases seemingly caused by the Delta variant.
The entry ban on travelers coming from Lebanon was lifted less than 2 months ago and is now being reimposed, as COVID-19 cases have been increasing rapidly over the past several days. This means that travelers coming from Lebanon are no longer eligible for restriction-free travel for non-essential purposes, such as tourism and business.
An increase in cases could be very problematic in Lebanon’s current state, considering hospitals are nowhere near equipped to maintain COVID-19 units amidst the medication and fuel shortages. Many doctors and medical staff have sounded the alarm regarding the state of the medical sector, which has been witnessing a downward spiral since the beginning of the crisis.
