One Of The Iconic Sahyoun Falafel Joints Closes Due To Crisis

Half of Beirut’s falafel rivalry has closed up shop.

We are sad to report that one of the Falafel Mustafa Sahyoun shops has closed due to the ongoing economic and financial crisis. For reference, it is the second shop to the right if you are going up the hill.

Open since 2006, this Sahyoun branch was born when a rivalry broke out between two brothers who inherited their dad’s falafel joint. Open since 1933, the father’s joint was forced to close down in 1978 due to the civil war. The brothers reopened the shop in 1992, and split up in 2006.

Annahar reports that the owner of the now closed Falafel Sahyoun has left the country.

After being considered a working man’s lunch for so long, falafel sandwiches have recently become pricey for some who are still working for severely devalued wages.
