Mysterious Places You Can Explore This Weekend Around Jbeil

If you’re a thrill-seeking person who enjoys discovering outdoor destinations, the city of Byblos and its surrounding are littered with bizarre sites that will leave you awed. Here are our four picks:

1. The lost land of Bjerrine

In Jbeil District, somewhere between Hsarat and Gherfine, lies a ruined village that was inhibited 100 years ago. Tales say its residents who fled the country escaping WWI starvation used to grow wheat crops and tobacco plants on site.

You will have to hike your way to ghost town because the road leading to it no longer exists.

2. Al Fidar Bridge

The bridge that now leads to nowhere, was built in 1942 by an Australian group when constructing a railway line linking Tripoli to Beirut, but its structure became deficient over time. A research paper has been done on the bridge, and solutions for retrofitting have already been proposed in 2014.

3. The abandoned hospital in Blat-Jbeil

The hospital operated in the 70s, and city citizens used to call it “Mestashfa El Shami” before it became known as “Mestashfa Tarabay”. Rumors say the hospital shut down after its owner’s death who used to work in it as a medical doctor. Patients’ beds can still be found inside.

A short dance film by Al-Sarab dance school was recently shot inside the creepy decaying institution!

4. Mseilha Fort

Located on Batroun Highway is this castle built atop a rocky outcrop to guard the route from Tripoli to Beirut, with a structure remodeled by Emir Fakhreddine II around 1624. It’s steeped in history and very easy to access. Climb to the top and enjoy the breathtaking view of the valley!
