Fires Continue To Plague Beirut Port Silos

Multiple fires have been reported over the past week at Beirut Port’s grain silos just weeks ahead of the August 4th Remembrance Day.

The first fire broke out on Thursday, with various smaller fires erupting over the weekend all the way through to Monday evening.

According to L’Orient Today, Civil Defense units are unable to put out the fires out of fears that the fragile silos may collapse when doused with water.

Claims of secretly initiating the demolition of the silos have been denied by Omar Itani, the director general of the port who claimed that the origin of the fires may be due to wheat fermentation.

Amidst the approval of the demolition of the silos, families of the victims fear the politicians’ attempts to erase the memorial and hide the evidence.
