We’ve asked you if you can figure out what these Beiruti words mean. Today, it is time to uncover the mystery that is the Zgharta accent! Here are a few phrases you’ll hear, and what they mean.

1. Deen mawtek: Quite literally, “damn your dead relatives!” – this intense phrase is hilarious when spoken by a Zghertewe.

2. 7a2 Se’Zghertee: AKA B 7a2 Saydit Zgharta. Akin to “I swear,” and it is said every few minutes.

3. Laffeh: Sandwich!

4. Yo2borne rabbak: A classic flirt.

5. Khayyo/Khayto: Brother, sister…and somehow a phrase they use like “man”.

6. Mawtek, ma32oule: Spoken when someone pisses them off.

7. Ykhaleelee albek: “Bless your heart,” said when someone is asking for a favor.

8. 3ayyou2a: A good looking and attractive woman.

9. Layta saydet Zghartee terda 3a ahlek w troob mawtek: This mouthful means, “May Our Lady of Zgharta bless you and your dead relatives’ dirt. Normally used when they want to praise you!

10. Ya ikhwet el shaleeteh: A watered down version of ekhtwet sharmouta, but used in a more playful and affectionate manner.
