Charges Dropped Against Bassam Al-Sheikh Hussein

Bassam al-Sheikh Hussein’s lawyer, Rami Olaik, confirmed this morning that Federal Bank has decided to drop the charges against his client. In addition, Lebanon’s public prosecutor Ghassan Oueidat has decided to release Hussein without any charges or possible future prosecution, according to Al-Jadeed.

Hussein had held Federal Bank’s Hamra branch hostage last Thursday, demanding he be given access to his deposits.

Bassam al-Sheikh Hussein had around $210,000 stuck in his account. He eventually accepted the bank’s offer of $35,000 and let the hostages go after which he was taken into the custody of the ISF. He claims that he needs the money to pay for his father’s $50,000 hospital treatment.

Protests in support of Hussein have been held since his arrest on Thursday.

According to L’Orient Today, Hussein’s brother has confirmed that Bassam has been on hunger strike since his arrest, and added that his brother “has no regrets.”
