Thank God For Window Cleaners

No one wants to be the garbage man.

With all the privileged jobs society offers–everyone wants to be a doctor or lawyer or businessman–menial jobs often go unrecognized and unappreciated.

Yet what would Lebanon be without Sukleen? What would happen if window cleaners and street sweepers and maids and waiters and taxi drivers took a day off?

Yes, these jobs takes less qualifications. But does that make them any less important? Many people cannot afford higher education and have no opportunities for wasta. And at the end of the day, a job is a job regardless of its prestige. Everyone has a family to support.

So thank God for window cleaners and garbage men and the countless maids and doormen who go unnoticed. Hard work comes in all shapes and forms; you don’t need a degree to prove your worth.
