Online Petition Aims to Secure Equal Rights for Lebanese LGBT Community

After last week’s headlines brought with it a homophobic mayor, the closing of a gay pub, and a brazen act of political bravo, the Lebanese community took the web to convey their disgust and dismay.

Going one step further, a petition was launched on avaaz.org, demanding fair treatment for the LGBT population in Lebanon.

Referring to the Article 534 of the Lebanese Penal Code, which prohibits having sexual relations that are “contradicting the laws of nature” under penalty of prison, the petition has already garnered over 250 signatures, and aims to eventually reach 10,000.

Should you want to voice your support for LGBT rights and help bring about a much needed change in a country that punishes “unnatural sex” with up to a year in prison, make sure to sign your name here.
