Five Noteworthy Stories You Might Have Missed in Lebanon This Week (1/4)

1.Bomb Goes Off in Dahiyeh Less Than a Week After Chatah Assassination

On Thursday, an explosion occurred in the Bir el-Abed neighborhood of Dahiyeh in southern Beirut. Five people were killed and more than 77 were wounded in the blast. Iman Hijazi, high school students Malak Zahwi and Ali Hassan Khadra, Adnan Awali and Abbas Karnib were among the dead.

This comes less than a week after a bomb went off in downtown Beirut, killing former Lebanese Ambassador to the US Mohammad Chatah and seven other people.

2. Leader of Abdallah Azzam Brigades linked to Iranian Embassy Bombing is Held in Lebanon

Wanted by the US, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon, Majid al Majid was arrested earlier this week by army intelligence between Hazmieh and Jamhour, according to the Daily Star newspaper.

Al Majid is the head of the Abdullah Azzam Brigades who claimed responsibility of the twin suicide attack on the Iranian Embassy in Beirut in November.

3. ISF Evacuates Mufti Qabbani from el Khasheqji Mosque



Mufti Sheikh Mohammed Rashid Qabbani was kicked out of el Khashekji Mosque last Sunday during Mohamad Al Chaar’s funeral. The teen was killed in the December 27 bomb attack near Starco Center.

Security forces helped evacuate the Mufti after a number of young men protested against his arrival at Chaar’s funeral. According to Naharnet, several fake evacuations were carried out to divert the attention of the protesters.

4. Eva is Kidnapped Again

Eva Ghazal, 13, was kidnapped in October and forced to marry Hussein Msheik. She was released a week later and her marriage was annulled. She was kidnapped again this past week by the same man according to Al-Akhbar newspaper.

5. Man stabbed to death in Metn

Mikhael Hadshiti was found dead in a cab in Broumana on December 30. The 59-year-old was stabbed 19 times in the face, shoulders, chest and hands according to the Daily Star newspaper.

Hadshiti’s wallet remained intact which have led police to believe a a personal dispute was the motive behind the crime. No suspects have been taken into custody.
