Kite Flying Competition in Mhaidthe

Sunday, Aug 31, 2014
11:00am -> 1:30pm
Al Mhaidthe

In 1946, Dr. Adib Assaad brought his love for kites to his home village, Mhaidthe. He started making his own kites and flew them in Ain elAsh, the windiest part of the village, attracting villagers and visitors. He initiated the Kite Flying Celebration or Eid el Tayaran, for the inhabitants of the village. He would buy and distribute colored paper and bamboo sticks for the participants to build their kites. Young and old, boys and girls, everyone would participate.

Since then, the tradition has continued and the people of Mhaidthe have embraced the kite flying tradition, attracting people from the surrounding villages and even further away. It was even the inspiration behind the Rahbani Brothers and Fairuz’s song: “Tiri ya tiyara”!
